FIRST DAY OF LENT

SUNDAY MASS IN RADIUM RESUMES

OUR PILGRIMAGE OF FAITH:

has realized $8,947.50 to date. 30 parishioners have contributed. Last year, due to the generosity of one donor-family (& the dollar-matching plan that resulted), the campaign netted almost $10,000 in excess of our assessed goal. This enabled several maintenance projects to be undertaken (especially in the Rectory) that could not have been accomplished otherwise. Any monies collected over and above this year's $12,000 assessed goal will remain in the parish.

ROSARY

led by CWL members after Mass every Friday.

FAMOUS PRAY-ERS:

Honesty if the first chapter of the book of wisdom. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. Romans 12:17.

Come and see
[This title is Jesus' answer to the disciples when they asked him "Where do you live?"]

How does the Rosary "work"? (Cont.)

Last week, this column described prayer in monasteries and the way monks pray the 150 psalms of the Psalter. Like waves of faith, one choir of monks respond to the prayer of the other choir, alternating the verses of the psalms in mantra-like verses. They do not try to pay attention to what they are saying, word for word; it is through the experience rather than with words, that they pray. With that background we may better understand how the rosary "works."

Early in the history of the Church, spiritual leaders came to realize that communal recitation of the psalms was impractical for many lay Christians. So the Rosary (with its 150 Hail Marys in the complete Rosary of 15 decades) became the prayer-alternative to monastic prayer. When the "Hail Mary" prayer is alternated with the "Holy Mary" response, we have an experience similar to the one in monasteries. Again, what we hear is a wave of faith from the lips of one group, responded to by the shared faith of the other group. Some people find that the memorized, rote, repetitive prayers of the Rosary are not prayerful for them because they cannot reflect on the individual words and the Mystery of the decade. However, when we understand that the Rosary-format focuses on sharing faith rather than on the words "said", perhaps the Rosary becomes a more satisfying spiritual experience.

STUDY GROUP

Mon., Mar. 17th, 7:00pm. Topic: Chapters 22, 23 & 24 and 19, 20, 21 (time permitting).

ALTAR SERVERS

SHARE LENT- "THE EARTH IS FOR ALL"

Our community is asked to make ourselves aware of the needs of the countries that will benefit from the Share Lent Campaign. To that end the children's catechism groups, the CWL & the KC'S have embarked on a series of 'mini-events' to raise funds while keeping the people of Rwanda, El Salvador, & Nigeria in our thoughts and prayers. We ask for your generous support for the following events:
1st Sunday of Lent: Mar. 9th Gr. 2/5-PENNY DRIVE
2nd Sunday of Lent: Mar. 16th CWL - Easter Basket raffle
3rd Sunday of Lent: Mar. 23rd KC - PANCAKE BREAKFAST
4TH Sunday of Lent: Mar. 30th Gr. 3/K-1-CAN & BOTTLE DRIVE
5th Sunday of Lent: Apr. 6th (Radium) Gr. 4-TEA & GOODIES.
Gr. 7/Youth-CAR WASH (while you have your tea & goodies!!!)
We would ask that you 'plan' for each of these events & help support our youth in their Lenten observance of Doing Good Works. More details of each event will be announced weekly (but start gathering pennies & cans now :)
