LENT
begins this week with Mass on Ash Wed., at 9:00 am & 7:00 pm. Ash Wednesday is a Day of Fast and Abstinence from eating meat. The law of abstinence from meat binds those who are 14 and older; the law of fasting binds those from 18 to 59 years of age. Indeed, all Fridays of the year are days of abstinence from meat but Catholics in Canada have been given the privilege of substituting abstinence with special acts of charity or piety on Fridays. However, given the penitential character of Lent, penance is to be considered an important requirement of the Christian life and abstaining from meat on the Fridays of Lent is a laudable Catholic practice. Almsgiving, prayer and works of mercy are other privileged forms of penance - privileged because they are based on the teaching of the gospel.

One time when I was teaching a Grade Five class about the Rosary, I held up the rosary beads and asked: "Does anybody here say the Rosary?" To which one boy replied: "I would if I knew how it works." Here's how the Rosary "works."
From the very earliest centuries of monasticism, the prayer of the monks in monasteries was the Psalter - the 150 psalms. The psalms were divided into verses as is the Responsorial Psalm at Mass. The monks chanted them prayerfully, in choirs that faced each other. In fact, the British House of Commons took its shape from English kings confiscating monasteries and using their churches to conduct Parliament.
The chant was like a mantra and the monks were drawn gently, almost imperceptibly, even into breathing in unison. The experience might be compared to waves of the ocean, breaking upon the shore--one choir of a hundred or so voices singing a verse, and the opposite choir responding in a wave of faith. The monks did not try to pay attention the text, work-by-word. Rather, they listened for whatever "word" they might "hear" from the experience of the psalms "washing" over them in the calmness of this back-and-forth recitation.
Without books (and indeed, many unable to read), they knew the whole Psalter of 150 psalms by memory and they lost themselves in the experience of contemplating God. This background helps us to understand the Rosary as a prayer, and the comparison will be continued in next week's column.
Anyone (men/women/children) who would like to serve the parish in this ministry is requested to contact Fr. Gordon. Preparation will be arranged. | ![]() |
