PRAYING THE ROSARY EVERY FRIDAY AFTER MASS

At their February Meeting, the ladies of the CWL approved a motion to pray the Rosary after morning Mass on Fridays. The idea was prompted by several reasons: Pope John Paul II has written an Apostolic Letter declaring 2003 the "Year of the Rosary" and added the mysteries of Light to the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious mysteries of the Rosary. Also, it is a frequent Catholic practice in parishes to pray the Rosary in connection with Sunday or weekday Mass. And no one could dispute that people feel a need to be prayerful on a personal, parish, national and international level these days. These are some of the reasons that prompted the CWL to begin the Rosary at the beginning of March. Thus, next Friday (& on Fridays thereafter), parishioners are invited to take advantage of this opportunity as you see fit.

OUR PILGRIMAGE OF FAITH:

has realized $8,604.00 to date. 30 parishioners have contributed. Last year, due to the generosity of one donor-family (& the dollar-matching plan that resulted), the campaign netted almost $10,000 in excess of our assessed goal. This enabled several maintenance projects to be undertaken (especially in the Rectory) that could not have been accomplished otherwise. Any monies collected over and above this year's $12,000 assessed goal will remain in the parish.

BURSARIES

are offered annually by the Sisters of St. Joseph of London to anyone who would like to train for ministry in the local Church. Courses may be brief (a week or two), a semester, or year-long. The deadline for applying is Apr. 15th & application forms are available on the bulletin board in the foyer.

KNEELING DURING MASS

is appropriate from after reciting/singing "Hosanna in the highest" (in the "Holy, Holy, Holy") until after the elevation of the chalice.

MINISTRY TO THE SICK:

  1. The Liturgy Committee is initiating the apostolate of "Ministry to the sick". Anyone who would like to volunteer in this ministry is requested to contact Mary McLaughlin (347-7764). Preparation/training will be offered to those who are new to this ministry.
  2. Whenever someone is in hospital, a family member is requested to inform Fr. Gordon or Mary McLaughlin.
  3. As soon as this Ministry is under way, we sill celebrate a "Commissioning Rite" at a Sunday Mass to highlight the fact that the Ministers are bringing Communion to the sick.

NO MASS

Tues., Wed., Thurs., this week while Gr. Gordon is giving a Retreat Day in Cranbrook and attending the Deanery Meeting in Fernie.

MARIAN HOUR OF PRAYER

DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE COORDINATOR NEEDED:

http://www.devp.com The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (CCODP) is an organization that is active in most parishes across Canada. It is founded the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) and is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. CCODP is best known for its Share Lent Campaign and this year's focus is on Rwanda, El Salvador & East Timor. Development and Peace is much more than just giving financial aid to Third World peoples - it first and foremost shows the Charity of Christ in the Family of Man. The parish is grateful to Marilyn Kraayvanger for the many years during which she filled this office. Parties who will offer to carry this ministry into the future are invited to contact Don Jones or Fr. Gordon. "Hidden in Plain Sight"-the SOA

FAMOUS PRAY-ERS:

Come and see
[This title is Jesus' answer to the disciples when they asked him "Where do you live?"]

What is the role of altar servers at Mass?

The priest does not need altar servers. The wine, water and other necessary items can be placed on the altar, easily within his reach. Altar servers are not "there" just to serve the priest.

It's the CONGREGATION who needs altar servers. Altar servers are "there" to serve the congregation. Along with all the other ministers, altar servers are hosts who serve at the Lord's Banquet Table. Their role is to extend hospitality throughout Mass in the same spirit as the ushers and greeters show welcome and hospitality at the church entrance.

We might compare the Mass to dinner at someone's home. When we are invited to the table, we would get a surprise if the host announced: "The meat's in the oven, the potatoes are on top of the stove and the desert is in the fridge." We wouldn't go home hungry, but we would be aware that something was missing. It could be called a meal but it would hardly be a "Celebration".

Even if the dinner was served "buffet style", it would still be served. Gestures of hospitality on the part of the host would still be very visible.

That is why Liturgy includes altar servers at Mass. They are another sign, up front, that the Lord is giving a Banquet for God's People. The priest is not the host; Jesus, the High Priest is the Host. The priest is a reminder of the Priesthood of Jesus. But the sanctuary would never be left to appear as if the people are just "out there." The people-the guests-are symbolically present in the various ministries as all are nourished by Word and Sacrament.

The ministry of serving at the altar is as open to adults as it is to children. The Liturgy illustrates children hosting dads; mothers hosting children; grandfathers hosting youth; singles hosting couples, etc. When we are at the Lord's Banquet table, what stands out is not the earthly vocation but our call to the Eternal Banquet Table in the Kingdom.

So a parish needs to have altar servers. Without them, something is missing. They should be part of the Mass as regularly as the congregation is part of the Mass. A sanctuary that is empty of servers could be saying that hosting the guests at the Lord's Banquet is not important to us. And that is a position we could never defend.

ALTAR SERVERS

Anyone (men/women/children) who would like to serve the parish in this ministry is requested to contact Fr. Gordon. Preparation will be arranged.
