The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (CCODP) is an organization that is active in most parishes across Canada. It is founded the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) and is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. CCODP is best known for its Share Lent Campaign and this year's focus is on Rwanda, El Salvador & East Timor. Development and Peace is much more than just giving financial aid to Third World peoples - it first and foremost shows the Charity of Christ in the Family of Man. The parish is grateful to Marilyn Kraayvanger for the many years during which she filled this office. Parties who will offer to carry this ministry into the future are invited to contact Don Jones or Fr. Gordon. | "Hidden in Plain Sight"-the SOA Hear Bud Godderis speak about the US Army's School of the Americas, a training school for Latin American Military, & see a video about Nov. Vigil. The priest does not need altar servers. The wine, water and other necessary items can be placed on the altar, easily within his reach. Altar servers are not "there" just to serve the priest.
It's the CONGREGATION who needs altar servers. Altar servers are "there" to serve the congregation. Along with all the other ministers, altar servers are hosts who serve at the Lord's Banquet Table. Their role is to extend hospitality throughout Mass in the same spirit as the ushers and greeters show welcome and hospitality at the church entrance.
We might compare the Mass to dinner at someone's home. When we are invited to the table, we would get a surprise if the host announced: "The meat's in the oven, the potatoes are on top of the stove and the desert is in the fridge." We wouldn't go home hungry, but we would be aware that something was missing. It could be called a meal but it would hardly be a "Celebration".
Even if the dinner was served "buffet style", it would still be served. Gestures of hospitality on the part of the host would still be very visible.
That is why Liturgy includes altar servers at Mass. They are another sign, up front, that the Lord is giving a Banquet for God's People. The priest is not the host; Jesus, the High Priest is the Host. The priest is a reminder of the Priesthood of Jesus. But the sanctuary would never be left to appear as if the people are just "out there." The people-the guests-are symbolically present in the various ministries as all are nourished by Word and Sacrament.
The ministry of serving at the altar is as open to adults as it is to children. The Liturgy illustrates children hosting dads; mothers hosting children; grandfathers hosting youth; singles hosting couples, etc. When we are at the Lord's Banquet table, what stands out is not the earthly vocation but our call to the Eternal Banquet Table in the Kingdom.
So a parish needs to have altar servers. Without them, something is missing. They should be part of the Mass as regularly as the congregation is part of the Mass. A sanctuary that is empty of servers could be saying that hosting the guests at the Lord's Banquet is not important to us. And that is a position we could never defend.
Anyone (men/women/children) who would like to serve the parish in this ministry is requested to contact Fr. Gordon. Preparation will be arranged. | ![]() |
