FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Can you believe that Jesus wants to heal you, now,
the same way as the Gospel tells of Jesus healing others, then?
KNEELING/STANDING/BOWING AT THE CONSECRATION DURING MASSAs the General
Instruction urges, "Those who are prevented from kneeling at the consecration by
reason of health, lack of space, the large number of people present, or some
other good reason should make a profound bow while the priest is genuflecting
after the consecration". In support of those who want to be faithful to the
spirit of the liturgy in these ways, from now on we will put these practices
into effect at Sunday Mass.
OUR PILGRIMAGE OF FAITH: has realized $8,379.00 to date.
27 parishioners have contributed. Last year, due to the generosity of one donor-family
(& the dollar-matching plan that resulted), the campaign netted almost $10,000 in excess
of our assessed goal. This enabled several maintenance projects to be undertaken
(especially in the Rectory) that could not have been accomplished otherwise. Any monies
collected over and above this year's $12,000 assessed goal will remain in the parish.
MINISTRY TO THE SICK:
Feb. 11th is the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and marks the 11th World Day of the Sick since Pope John Paul II first invited Catholics around the World to help Christ, the Divine Physician, to heal those who are infirm (which is all of us in one way or another). So it is a fitting time for our parish to implement a more visible Ministry to the Sick. There are several things that need to be said about parishioners who are sick at home, in hospital, or resident in a senior citizens' home.
- The parish would like to assure the sick that we are "with" them in spirit even when they are unable to attend church. But in many cases we are not even aware when they are not with us. Therefore, in the case of short-term or long-term sickness, family members are requested to inform the parish when someone is sick or shut-in.
- The Liturgy Committee is initiating the apostolate of "Ministry to the sick". Anyone who would like to volunteer to perform this ministry is requested to contact Mary McLaughlin (347-7764). The parish is prepared to help volunteers who are new to this ministry, to feel comfortable in it.
- As mentioned above, if you know of anyone who is unable to get out to Mass or who would like to receive a visit or Communion in their home, please inform Mary.
- As soon as this Ministry is under way, we will celebrate a "Commissioning Rite" at a Sunday Mass to highlight the fact that the Ministers are bringing Communion to the sick at home and that they are very much part of our parish community.
AN "EXTRA" MICROPHONE
has "appeared on the lectern in Radium & we would like to
know if it is permanent or just on loan, Please contact Gr. Gordon if you have
any information. |

DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE COORDINATOR NEEDED:
http://www.devp.com |
The Canadian Catholic Organization
for Development and Peace (CCODP) is an organization that is active in most
parishes across Canada. It is founded the Canadian Conference of Catholic
Bishops (CCCB) and is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. CCODP is best
known for its Share Lent Campaign and this year's focus is on Rwanda, El
Salvador & East Timor. Development and Peace is much more than just giving
financial aid to Third World peoples - it first and foremost shows the Charity
of Christ in the Family of Man. The parish is grateful to Marilyn Kraayvanger
for the many years during which she filled this office. Parties who will offer
to carry this ministry into the future are invited to contact Don Jones or Fr.
Gordon.

[This title is Jesus' answer to the disciples when they asked him "Where do you live?"]
Is there anything we "do" in ordinary life that can be compared to Liturgy?
Yes, but we probably don't think about those comparable things very often
because they "speak" for themselves and we know what they mean. The things we
"do" habitually in liturgy also eventually become established in our heart and
speak for themselves.
One example from ordinary life (although we wish we would never see it) is the
memorials which often spring up spontaneously after a global or mass tragedy.
We saw them on TV last week from the Johnson Space Centre in Houston and at
Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School near Okotoks, AB. In both instances, memorial
walls appeared, comprised of flowers, teddy bears, candles, greeting cards,
handwritten notes - varied mementos to express people's feelings for which they
had no words. That is the genius of symbol. That is the genius of Liturgy.
They represent a kind of sign language which speaks from the heart, leaving room
for the imagination to say what needs to be said, and to hear what heeds to be
heard.
So the liturgy is a precious gift in the Catholic Church and our everyday life
is filled with parallel examples. But we grow gradually into understanding what
the symbols at Mass mean. It was the same with memorial walls when they first
appeared. A person might be tempted to criticize the action or to vandalize the
wall until he learns that a teddy bear placed in a memorial wall is a sign of
someone's love for a friend. Human respect and the Law prevent that from
happening because a memorial wall (and the Liturgy) make a statement of truth
that cannot be denied.
