KNEELING/STANDING/BOWING AT THE CONSECRATION DURING MASS

As was explained in last week's bulletin, the Parish Pastoral Council approved a motion to pursue installing kneelers on the pews in the church in Radium and in Invermere. The time frame for this project is undefined so we are invited to begin introducing kneeling into our devotional practice now or when the kneelers have been installed. However, beginning now, (as stated in the General instruction of the Roman Missal) "Those who are prevented from kneeling at the consecration by reason of health, lack of space, the large number of people present, or some other good reason should make a profound bow while the priest is genuflecting after the consecration". In support of those who want to be faithful to the spirit of the liturgy in these ways, from now on we will put these practices into effect at Sunday Mass.

OUR PILGRIMAGE OF FAITH:

has realized $8,379.00 to date. 27 parishioners have contributed. Last year, due to the generosity of one donor-family (& the dollar-matching plan that resulted), the campaign netted almost $10,000 in excess of our assessed goal. This enabled several maintenance projects to be undertaken (especially in the Rectory) that could not have been accomplished otherwise. Any monies collected over and above this year's $12,000 assessed goal will remain in the parish.

MEMBERS OF PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL

are reminded that Minutes of the January Meeting can be picked up from the top file just inside the Sacristy door.

DOES ANYONE KNOW?

Where the extra microphone in Radium came from? Over Christmas, an extra microphone was needed in Invermere so we borrowed the one in Radium since it was not needed there (except for Christmas Mass). However, in the meantime another microphone has appeared and we would like to know if it is permanent or just on loan. Please contact Fr. Gordon if you have any information.

ADULT ALTAR SERVERS

Anyone (men/women) who would like to serve the parish in this ministry is invited to contact Fr. Gordon. Preparation will be arranged.

DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE COORDINATOR NEEDED:

http://www.devp.com The Canadian Catholic Organization forDevelopment and Peace (CCODP) is an organization that is active in most parishes across Canada. It is founded the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) and is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. CCODP is best known for its Share Lent Campaign and this year's focus is on Rwanda, El Salvador & East Timor. Development and Peace is much more than just giving financial aid to Third World peoples - it first and foremost shows the Charity of Christ in the Family of Man. The parish is grateful to Marilyn Kraayvanger for the many years during which she filled this office. Parties who will offer to carry this ministry into the future are invited to contact Don Jones or Fr. Gordon.

LENT AND SMALL FAITH COMMUNITIES:

A workshop at Christ the Servant Parish, Cranbrook, Fri., Feb. 14th, 1:00 pm, will explain a six-week Scripture Study program which reflects on the Readings of the upcoming Sunday. The invitation is extended to people who would be willing to host a group of 6 or 8 in their home and lead the session. The program will be explained by Fr. Frank Ruetz of Resurrection Centre, Waterloo, ON. More information is available on the Feb. 14th workshop and anyone from this parish who would be interested, please contact Fr. Gordon.

Does the General Instruction say anything else about kneeling?

No, not specifically about kneeling; but it says this about posture as a sign of Unity. (To quote): "The movements and posture of the priest, the ministers and the people ought to draw things together in such a way that the entire celebration shines with beauty and noble simplicity. Therefore, attention must be paid to the traditional practice of the Roman Rite and to what pertains to the common spiritual good of the people of God, rather than to private inclination or arbitrary choice.

"The uniformity of posture, which must be observed by all participants, is a sign of the unity of the members of the Christian community gathered for the Sacred Liturgy: it both expresses and fosters the mind and spiritual attitude of the participants." (End of quote)

Music and singing are other elements in liturgy which foster unity. This is obvious whenever we "use" music in the secular and social aspects of life. For example: when people gather around a piano or with a guitarist for a "sing-song" at a party; when a soloist invites the audience to sing Christmas carols with him/her at a concert; when the national anthem is sung at a sporting event; in a parade, when the band strikes up a familiar melody and the parade master invites spectators to join in. In such circumstances, singing together fosters the sense of one-ness and belonging which liturgy celebrates for God's People. We are never more ONE than when we gather together as God's Family at the Lord's Banquet Table for Eucharist.
