THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

There is no doubt in Scripture about how God "works"; God "calls", and God leaves it up to us as to how we will respond.

STUDY GROUP:

LEADER OF SONG

- needed for the Saturday Evening Mass.

CANDIDATES FOR THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION

are introduced to the parish at Mass this Sunday morning. A certificate for each candidate will be available in the Front Entrance for the next two weeks and parishioners are invited to sign some or all certificates, as an indication of your witness, support and prayer for these young people who are committing themselves to the Catholic faith for a lifetime by being confirmed. Candidates are: Amanda Thiesen, Samantha Helmer, Caitlin Sharp, Jennifer Welsh, Sean Reiter, Greg Helmer, Emma Milligen, Christina Welbing, Charlie Smith, Alexander Helmer, Ben Duncan, Michal Grochowiecki & Dominic Furger. Colleen Weller & Pat Welsh meet with the candidates every Tues. Afternoon throughout the year for catechesis. The Parish extends congratulations to the candidates and thanks to their teachers. Watch the bulletin for the Date of Confirmation which will soon be announced by the Bishop's Office.

OUR PILGRIMAGE OF FAITH:

has realized $8,379.00 to date. 27 parishioners have contributed. Last year, due to the generosity of one donor-family (& the dollar-matching plan that resulted), the campaign netted almost $10,000 in excess of our assessed goal. This enabled several maintenance projects to be undertaken (especially in the Rectory) that could not have been accomplished otherwise. Any monies collected over and above this year's $12,000 assessed goal will remain in the parish.

PARISH COUNCIL'S DECISION ON KNEELING

- is explained in the "Come and See" column in this week's bulletin.

OUR PARISH WEB SITE:

http://jcanada.faithweb.com is now "live" and current. Web mistress is Katie Hannah, a Gr. 9 student at St. Margaret School, Calgary. Katie manages the site from her home in Calgary. The Bulletin is on the site each week, as well as other links to the Diocese. The parish is also listed on the new Invermere.com site. Sincere thanks to Katie and Dianne Kienitz who so capably offer this service to the parish.

NEW LITURGICAL MINISTRIES:

The Children's Altar Serving schedule is heavier than they can cover, so Adult Altar Servers (men & women) are invited to prepare, if they are interested. Please mention to Fr. Gordon if you would like to participate: training will be provided and a schedule will be prepared. Also, soon the Processional Cross will lead the Entrance Procession and you are invited to share that ministry whenever you are asked.

DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE COORDINATOR NEEDED:

http://www.devp.com The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (CCODP) is an organization that is active in most parishes across Canada. It is founded by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) and is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. CCODP is best known for its Share Lent Campaign and this year's focus is on Rwanda, El Salvador & East Timor. Development and Peace is much more than just giving financial aid to Third World peoples - it first and foremost shows the Charity of Christ in the Family of Man. The parish is grateful to Marilyn Kraayvanger for the many years during which she filled this office. Parties who will offer to carry this ministry into the future are invited to contact Don Jones or Fr. Gordon.

LENT AND SMALL FAITH COMMUNITIES:

A workshop at Christ the Servant Parish, Cranbrook, Fri., Feb. 14th, 1:00 pm, will explain a six-week Scripture Study program which reflects on the Readings of the upcoming Sunday. The invitation is extended to people who would be willing to host a group of 6 or 8 in their home and lead the session. The program will be explained by Fr. Frank Ruetz of Resurrection Centre, Waterloo, ON. More information is available on the Feb. 14th workshop and anyone from this parish who would be interested, please contact Fr. Gordon.

What are we "doing" at Mass?

As a parish, where are we "at" with kneeling?

Aware of the absence of kneelers in some churches, Bishop Cooney expresses the desire that we do what we can to implement this directive of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal. It states: "The faithful should kneel at the consecration, except when prevented by reasons of health, lack of space, the large number of people present, or some other good reason. Those who do not kneel at consecration, however, should make a profound bow while the priest is genuflecting after the consecration."

Some items on the document are left to national Conferences of Bishops to adapt and as Bishop Cooney's letter (Oct. 30/02) stated: "The Canadian Bishops unanimously agreed to establish the posture of kneeling, as a minimum norm, from the end of the 'Holy, holy, holy' until the Memorial Acclamation, following the elevation of the sacred Blood."

Accordingly, the Parish Pastoral Council unanimously approved a motion to undertake installing kneelers on the pews in Radium & Invermere. Such items as design, material, construction, installation and cost will be pursued.

In reaching their conclusion, the following are some of the concerns which the Council considered: the long tradition of kneeling in Catholic practice; the habit of kneeling which several parishioners already demonstrate in practice supportive response given to this initiative elsewhere in the diocese; the role of posture (and change of posture) within liturgy; kneeling, as a symbol (of praying), etc.

The time frame for this project is undefined so we are invited to begin introducing kneeling into our devotional practice now or when the kneelers have been installed. However, beginning next Sunday we should "make a profound bow while the Priest is genuflecting after the consecration."

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY

- Jan. 19- 26th. Pope John XXIII was at the closing ceremony of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in 1959 when he announced the Second Vatican Council. Ecumenism presented a growing challenge at the time and it became such a major theme at the Council that it is sometimes referred to as an "ecumenical council". The desire for unity in Christendom began first in Protestant circles a couple centuries earlier in Scotland, but prompted by the encouragement given to Catholics by the Council, major progress has continued even up until now. Prayer needs to be supported by charity and good works that promote unity. And as the Council document on Ecumenism points out, "We must become familiar with the outlook of our separated brethren and study is absolutely required for this."
