The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (CCODP) is an organization that is active in most parishes across Canada. It is founded by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) and is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. CCODP is best known for its Share Lent Campaign and this year's focus is on Rwanda, El Salvador & East Timor. Development and Peace is much more than just giving financial aid to Third World peoples - it first and foremost shows the Charity of Christ in the Family of Man. The parish is grateful to Marilyn Kraayvanger for the many years during which she filled this office. Parties who will offer to carry this ministry into the future are invited to contact Don Jones or Fr. Gordon. |

As a parish, where are we "at" with kneeling?
Aware of the absence of kneelers in some churches, Bishop Cooney expresses the desire that we do what we can to implement this directive of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal. It states: "The faithful should kneel at the consecration, except when prevented by reasons of health, lack of space, the large number of people present, or some other good reason. Those who do not kneel at consecration, however, should make a profound bow while the priest is genuflecting after the consecration."
Some items on the document are left to national Conferences of Bishops to adapt and as Bishop Cooney's letter (Oct. 30/02) stated: "The Canadian Bishops unanimously agreed to establish the posture of kneeling, as a minimum norm, from the end of the 'Holy, holy, holy' until the Memorial Acclamation, following the elevation of the sacred Blood."
Accordingly, the Parish Pastoral Council unanimously approved a motion to undertake installing kneelers on the pews in Radium & Invermere. Such items as design, material, construction, installation and cost will be pursued.
In reaching their conclusion, the following are some of the concerns which the Council considered: the long tradition of kneeling in Catholic practice; the habit of kneeling which several parishioners already demonstrate in practice supportive response given to this initiative elsewhere in the diocese; the role of posture (and change of posture) within liturgy; kneeling, as a symbol (of praying), etc.
The time frame for this project is undefined so we are invited to begin introducing kneeling into our devotional practice now or when the kneelers have been installed. However, beginning next Sunday we should "make a profound bow while the Priest is genuflecting after the consecration."
WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY
- Jan. 19- 26th. Pope John XXIII was at the closing ceremony of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in 1959 when he announced the Second Vatican Council. Ecumenism presented a growing challenge at the time and it became such a major theme at the Council that it is sometimes referred to as an "ecumenical council". The desire for unity in Christendom began first in Protestant circles a couple centuries earlier in Scotland, but prompted by the encouragement given to Catholics by the Council, major progress has continued even up until now. Prayer needs to be supported by charity and good works that promote unity. And as the Council document on Ecumenism points out, "We must become familiar with the outlook of our separated brethren and study is absolutely required for this."
