CWL MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

I am here today to invite every woman in our parish community to become a member of The Catholic Women's League of Canada. In doing so, I am giving you the opportunity to become an active participant with us on your own faith journey.

Since the inception of the national organization in 1920, members of the CWL have been actively working 'For God and Canada'. The pioneers of this organization worked closely with immigrants to help them adjust to a foreign land. Some councils continue to do this important work.

As the church and the CWL grew, our members continued to look at the needs of the local community and set into motion activities that alleviate the anguish and suffering of those less fortunate.

Today, we see CWL members involved in every aspect of community and parish life. Most of you know that we support all life issues, but did you know that we also support women's programs in developing countries through MaterCare International, Coady International Institute and Development & Peace?

You know that our members hold bake sales to raise funds for many charities, but did you know that members of our national executive meet annually with federal government ministers on issues raised by our resolutions which, in recent years, have included child pornography, land mines, clean water, genetic engineering of food, bioethics and reproductive technology?

IF you believe in the sanctity of human life,

IF you want to develop a deeper spiritual life,

IF you uphold the dignity of all human beings,

IF you believe women play an important role in church and society,

IF you strive to set a Christian example in your home and work place,

IF you believe in the power of prayer,

THEN you belong with us!

We want to give you this opportunity to share your God-given gifts with us as we try to effect change in our parish, our community, our country and in those countries that have not been blessed with the abundance we enjoy in Canada. I encourage you to find out more by talking to one of the CWL members who will be at the back of the church after mass. They will be happy to tell you more about us, our goals and objectives. Thank you

Come and see

[This title is Jesus' answer to the disciples when they asked him "Where do you live?"]

What are we "doing" at Mass?

This column continues to summarize "The General Instruction of the Roman Missal" which we began last week. For the most part, what appears here are sentences "lifted" directly from the text which express the theology behind the liturgy as we know it.

A very ancient principle of Church practice is stated in these words: "Lexorandi, lex credendi" - which means - "As we believe, so do we pray". In other words: The church's rule of prayer corresponds to her perennial rule of faith. Our prayer is an overflow from our faith.

The unchanging faith of the church is that the sacrifice of the cross and its sacramental renewal in the Mass, which Christ instituted at the Last supper, are one and the same, differing only in the manner of offering. In every Mass we "see" the continuation of the power of Christ, the High Priest, at work in and for us. The celebration of the Eucharist is the action of all of God's People: The nature of the ministerial priesthood proper to a priest, offers the sacrifice in the person of Christ. At the same time, the spiritual sacrifice of the faithful (the royal priesthood of the faithful) is brought to completeness in union with the sacrifice of Christ, the one and only Mediator.

At the Second Vatican Council, the Church tried to express the mysteries of our faith in ways that "speak to this age. In doing so, it was also mindful of its unbroken tradition of handing on the lived faith from one generation to the next. So the liturgy we know today has grown out of all ages over the centuries.

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY
- Jan. 19- 26th. Pope John XXIII was at the closing ceremony of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in 1959 when he announced the Second Vatican Council. Ecumenism presented a growing challenge at the time and it became such a major theme at the Council that it is sometimes referred to as an "ecumenical council". The desire for unity in Christendom began first in Protestant circles a couple centuries earlier in Scotland, but prompted by the encouragement given to Catholics by the Council, major progress has continued even up until now. Prayer needs to be supported by charity and good works that promote unity. And as the Council document on Ecumenism points out, "We must become familiar with the outlook of our separated brethren and study is absolutely required for this."
