Text Box: MUSIC MINISTRY -is a most treasured service in the Church whenever we gather for worship & praise. Following up on the Installation Ceremonies of Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers and Ushers which we celebrated during Advent, we will extend our appreciation to the Choir and all music ministers with a special Blessing at Mass next weekend. Next Sunday, as we enter the Season of Ordinary Time, it is a fitting moment to focus our appreciation on what Music Ministers gave us over the Christmas Season, just ending.

Text Box: LEADER OF SONG -needed for

OUR  PILGRIMAGE OF FAITH: has realized $8,379.00 to date.  A hearty “Thank You” to the 27 contributors.  The campaign continues; and remember that our parish benefits since we retain whatever is given in excess of our $12,000.00 assessed goal.

NEW LITURGICAL MINISTRIES: The Children’s Altar Serving schedule is heavier than they can cover, so Adult Altar Servers (men & women) are invited to prepare, if they are interested.  Please mention to Fr. Gordon if you would like to participate: training will be provided and a schedule will be prepared.  Also, soon the Processional Cross will lead the Entrance Procession and you are invited to share that ministry whenever you are asked.

FAMOUS PRAY-ERS: The trouble with stretching the truth is that it’s apt to snap back.    A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall now escape.  Proverbs 19:5.

One of the Parish’s in the Diocese passed on the text of a letter from Archbishop McNeil from Toronto written in 1919 on why the CWL is so important to the Church’s mission in the larger Canadian Context.  (They felt his message seems even more vital today than in 1919) I would like to pass it on.

“Dear Father: Please announce on Sunday that a meeting of Catholic Women will be held in Columbus Hall on that afternoon, Nov. 30th, at 3:30 o’clock.  Read this announcement slowly and distinctly, and add that this meeting is important.  If Catholics are to hold their own in Canada they must organize.  Local Societies are helpful in parish and diocesan matters; but parish and diocesan matters would soon dwindle in importance if we left all matters of nation-wide importance to non-Catholic organizations.  We must take our place in the National life of Canada, not merely because this is needed in self-defense, but because Catholics have civic and social duties as well as others, and in these days wide organization is an essential factor in any work of national importance.  Toronto is not the first to act in this matter.  Already there are branches of the CWL in five or six other Canadian cities, and the design is to group all branches and other Women’s Societies in one confederacy.  This is the object of Sunday’s meeting.  There is nothing theoretical about it.  The need is already felt in concrete matters of importance to the Church.  Sincerely yours, N. McNeil, Archbishop of Toronto.

“Come and see”

This column’s title comes from the answer Jesus gave when the disciples asked him “Where do you live?”

What is liturgy all about?

This is the second time this year that the “Come and see” column has addressed this question.  And since “The (134-page) General Instruction on the Roman Missal” is now available, liturgy will be the topic of this column for many weeks into the future.

“The General Instruction” has been many years in the “works” and accompanies a new Altar Missal (Sacramentary) which is not yet available in English.  The “Instruction” is a text of liturgical, doctrinal and pastoral legislation for the universal Latin church and results from the Second Vatican Council (which concluded in 1965), and the new Code of Canon Law (which was promulgated in 1983).

The Church’s liturgical tradition is firmly grounded on the directive which Jesus gave for preparing the Lord’s Supper (Luke 22:7-13).

“When the day of Unleavened Bread came round, the day on which the passover had to be sacrificed, he sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make the preparations for us to eat the passover’.  ‘Where do you want us to prepare it?’ they asked.  ‘Listen’, he said ‘as you go into the city you will meet a man carrying a pitcher of water.  Follow him into the house he enters and tell the owner of the house, ‘The Master has this to say to you: Where is the dining room in which I can eat the Passover with my disciples?’ The man will show you a large upper room furnished with couches.  Make the preparations there.’  They set

off and found everything as he had told them, and prepared the Passover.”

The current norms for the celebration of Mass attest to the inner consistency of the Church’s tradition and they are evidence of the care, faith and unchanged love she holds for the Mystery of the Eucharist when some new elements are introduced.

CWL MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

I am here today to invite every woman in our parish community to become a member of The Catholic Women=s League of Canada. In doing so, I am giving you the opportunity to become an active participant with us on you own faith journey.

Since the inception of the national organization in 1920, members of the CWL have been actively working 'For God and Canada'. The pioneers of this organization worked closely with immigrants to help them adjust to a foreign land. Some councils continue to do this important work.

As the church and the CWL grew, our members continued to look at the needs of the local community and set into motion activities that alleviate the anguish and suffering of those less fortunate.

Today, we see CWL members involved in every aspect of community and parish life. Most of you know that we support all life issues, but did you know that we also support women=s programs in developing countries through MaterCare International, Coady International Institute and Development & Peace?

You know that our members hold bake sales to raise funds for many charities, but did you know that members of our national executive meet annually with federal government ministers on issues raised by our resolutions which, in recent years, have included child pornography, land mines, clean water, genetic engineering of food, bioethics and reproductive technology?

IF you believe in the sanctity of human life,

IF you want to develop a deeper spiritual life,

IF you uphold the dignity of all human beings,

IF you believe women play an important role in church and society,

IF you strive to set a Christian example in your home and work place,

IF you believe in the power of prayer,

THEN you belong with us!

We want to give you this opportunity to share your God-given gifts with us as we try to effect change in our parish, our community, our country and in those countries that have not been blessed with the abundance we enjoy in Canada. I encourage you to find out more by talking to one of the CWL members who will be at the back of the church after mass. They will be happy to tell you more about us, our goals and objectives. Thank you.
