Between now and Easter this column will focus on each of the liturgies of Holy Week and Easter. We begin today with the liturgy of Passion Sunday.
There are two elements which make this liturgy different from other Sundays: i) the Procession with Palms and ii) the Reading of the Passion. The Procession is a good reminder of what every liturgy tries to do. Liturgy re-enacts, re-lives, makes visible, -dramatizes what we Christians believe. And processions have a deep tradition in Catholic practice. A procession gets us from one place to another. A procession reminds us of our whole life -a journey which leads us from earth to Heaven. As we walk along the path of life, we walk the changing moods and gradual progress of "turning away from sin and being faithful to the Gospel". The Procession with Palms illustrates the fickleness of human nature which, in a very short time, often turns from hailing Jesus as our King to nailing him on a cross. The attention of someone watching the Procession might be attracted only to the palm branches. But he/she should not overlook the people carrying them. The participants are a sign, that we, in our folly, often "act" as if earthly life is our real destination. We go merrily on, (waving our branches), deaf to the message of Jesus: "My kingdom is not of this world". So the Procession with Palms leads us to the Reading of the Passion,--that sobering story which tells of the way by which God won us to his love.
